Flux-cored wire offers low-hydrogen weld deposits

Hobart Brothers Co. offers Hobart® FabCO® 712M gas-shielded, flux-cored wire for offshore drilling rig applications and jack-up rig fabrication.

The wire features less than 4 ml of diffusible hydrogen per 100 g of weldment. This helps decrease underbead cracking and reduce the amount of preheating required. It also has a very low moisture pickup, reducing the chance of hydrogen entering the weld after exposure to the atmosphere.

The wire’s fast-freezing slag can be removed easily, making it suitable for all-position welding and minimizing interpass and postweld cleaning, the manufacturer reports. The wire also offers low-temperature Charpy V-notch impact strengths (-40 to -75 degrees F), resulting in high mechanical toughness in both the as-welded and postweld heat-treat conditions.
