Flux-cored wires designed for high-strength pipe welding applications

Hobart Brothers has announced the availability of two new self-shielded, flux-cored wires designed to improve welding performance on high-strength pipe welding applications. The Hobart® Fabshield® 79T8™ and Fabshield 79T8 Ni2™ wires provide out-of-position welding capabilities and generate a fast-freezing, self-peeling slag to help minimize instances of slag inclusions and reduce cleanup time. The wires require no shielding gas, making them suitable for outdoor pipeline welding.

Both wires are available in 0.0625 and 0.078 in. dia. and provide low-temperature impact values to keep welds ductile and prevent cracking.

The 79T8 wire is designed for welding Grade X70 and below steel, as well as API 5L oil and gas transmission pipelines and city-city distribution pipelines. It provides a Charpy V-notch (CVN) property of 135 ft.-lbs. at-40 degrees F for the 0.078-in.-dia. wire. Tensile strengths are 80,400 and 81,700 PSI for the two diameters, respectively.

The 79T8 Ni2 wire meets the mechanical and chemical requirements for welding API 5L Grade X80 pipe and also can be used for nonpipeline applications, such as storage tanks and structural applications. It offers 96 ft.-lbs. for -40 degrees F for the 0.078-in.-dia. wire. It delivers 91,400 and 94,000 PSI of tensile strength for the two diameters, respectively.
