Femtosecond laser source minimizes postprocessing

Miyachi America Corp. has introduced its new Sigma Femtosecond laser tube cutting system. It is suitable for medical device applications, handling a variety of tube and stent diameters.

The tube cutter is a femto-powered machine, based on laser source provider Jenoptik’s ultrashort-pulse disc laser platform. It uses a cold ablation process to cut materials. Postprocessing is minimal, with only ultrasonic cleaning required for materials such as nitinol. The nearly cold cutting process means very fine feature sizes can be cut into thin materials, while mechanical and material integrity are maintained. No internal water cooling is needed for even the smallest-diameter tube.
