Laser cutting machine option keeps material cool during cutting

TRUMPF Inc. has introduced CoolLine, a new option for its 2-D laser cutting machines that implements a water mist to cool material as it is laser-cut. The option is integrated fully into the cutting process via a special laser cutting head, varying nozzles, and a water supply tank.

During cutting, the nozzle directs a water mist around the laser beam as it reaches the workpiece, reducing the heat transferred in the immediate cutting zone and allowing cutting of contours that might otherwise be difficult or impossible to achieve, especially in thick material.

Since the option prevents material from overheating, it allows parts to be nested closely. By removing heat and reducing the gap, the option helps fabricators process more parts while reducing scrap, the company reports.
