Guide gives design recommendations for large structural stainless steel sections

AISC has published "Design Guide No. 27, Structural Stainless Steel," which provides U.S. design recommendations for large structural stainless steel sections. Previously no guidance existed for heavier sections, meaning that building enforcement officials had to approve each application individually.

The guide covers material behavior and selection, cross-section design, member design, connections, and fabrication, and it includes design examples. It is written in the form of a specification, enabling designers to reference it as justification.

The International Molybdenum Association initiated the industrywide effort to get the guide published, which also involved stainless steel producers and industry associations. Written by Nancy Baddoo, associate director at the Steel Construction Institute, the guide is available for download from AISC’s website at www.aisc.org/dg.
