Ultrahigh-strength steel designed for auto industry applications

SSAB has developed Docol 1400 MZE ultrahigh-strength, electrogalvanized steel for automobile manufacturing applications. According to the company, the steel is strong, safe, lightweight, and corrosion-resistant while providing formability, weldability, and consistent mechanical properties.

Resistant to hydrogen embrittlement, the material contributes to high crash performance. It can be used for side impact beams, bumpers, battery protection for hybrid/electric cars, sill reinforcements, tunnel reinforcements, and cross and floor beams.

As a cold forming steel, it requires reduced energy for trimming processes. It can be welded using all standard methods and shaped into complex forms using both stamping and roll forming techniques.
