Robotic gripper automatically adapts to part sizes, shapes

The industrial-grade Robotiq S-model adaptive gripper, available from Motoman Robotics, is designed for applications including machine tending, fixture loading and unloading, high-mix part handling, and kitting. Its three articulated fingers can adapt automatically to various part sizes and shapes.

The gripper is suitable for applications requiring a single robot to handle a high mix of part types, eliminating the need for a tool changer and multiple tools. With its short stroke and elimination of tool change delays, the unit helps reduce setup costs and cycle time, according to the company.

Four operation modes — basic, wide, scissor, and pinch — are available. Sensorless grip detection distributes pressure on up to 10 contact points, minimizing the potential for part slippage.
