Double-sheet detector measures without contacting the metal
- October 17, 2016

Prime Controls has introduced the DS600 double-sheet detector. Its noncontact, single-probe sensor detects nonferrous metals, such as 300 series stainless steel and aluminum) in thicknesses from 0.001 to 0.150 in. By measuring the effects of eddy currents on the nonferrous metal near its face, the unit can detect the metal thickness and prevent double sheets or improper thicknesses from entering machines.
The detector does not need to make contact with the metal to take a measurement, which helps prevent surface defects. Housed in an IP65-rated enclosure, the system is well-suited for automation applications such as robotics, automated destackers, sheet feeders, and in-fixture (where sensing from only one side is possible).
Three versions of the control are available. The basic model is designed for applications that require detection of single or double sheets. For applications that require additional features and functionality, the Premium model offers eight-slot calibration memory, selected through discrete I/O, for quick changeovers with no recalibration required. This model provides threshold adjustments and variable timing during the detection process. The PremiumPLUS offers industrial communication in addition to 64-slot calibration memory and memory backup.
