Press offers alternative to fine blanking

LMC Inc. offers a series of blanking press systems based on adiabatic technology. According to the company, adiabatic blanking can produce parts from virtually any metal and tensile strength and has blanked material in hardness up to 50Rc.

The LMC SIP-15B press blanks up to 1,000 parts per minute. With the process, there are no crack and burr formations, the company says, and the blanked edges are square to each other and perpendicular to the face, not tapered as in traditional blanking.

The process uses a high velocity ram that impacts the zero-clearance punch and die system at speeds of 10 to 100 meters per second. This energy is transferred directly into the stock, and in less than a millisecond, the blanking is complete, the company says. During the process the punch moves only a few thousandths into the material separating the blank from the strip.

The process extends tool life and allows for closer nesting or parts. The systems are designed to be safe, efficient, easy to maintain, and easy to change over.

In 2001 R&D Magazineawarded the company with its "R&D100 Award" for both adiabatic cutting and forming.
