Noncontact instrument measures powder coating thickness

TQC has released PowderTag, an instrument that measures powder coating thickness up to 300 μm before and after cure. The noncontact, nondestructive tool works on metal substrates such as steel and aluminum using a combination of infrared and photothermal measurements.

Because the pulses do not need to be perpendicular and the measuring spot is small, the unit is suitable for determining coating thickness on small, curved, and hard-to-reach objects.

An LED pointer helps determine the correct distance and location. Parts can be tested on a slow-moving line without damage to the coating. Since the powder layer is measured before curing starts, necessary corrective action can be taken immediately in the coating process.
