Surface finish measuring system offers nanometer-range measurements

Mahr Federal has introduced an entry-level surface finish and contour measuring system that can generate both surface and contour measurements in a single pass. The MarSurf® UD 130 offers nanometer-range measurements, high measuring and positioning speeds, a biomimetic probe design with increased rigidity and dynamics, and automatic probe arm recognition.

A more economical version of the high-end MarSurf LD 130, the machine is designed for applications in industries such as automotive or bearings that require high resolution, but which may not have the very high-tolerance requirements of some optical and aerospace applications, says the company.

The unit features a measuring speed of up to 0.20 in./sec., traveling length of 5.12 in., Z-axis measuring up to 0.79 in., resolution of 2 nm, and an interferometric probe system. Probe movement is registered by photo diodes and evaluated electronically, allowing the system to achieve a very high resolution over a large range.
