Texture mapping module allows authentic color reproduction of 3-D data

July 30, 2014

Aicon 3D Systems offers an optional, add-on texture mapping module for Breuckmann Optocat2013R2 measuring and evaluation software. It captures and maps the color and pattern of a scanned object to its digital 3-D representation.

Texture mapping works with the internal imagery of the scanning sensor or with images taken with any kind of external camera. External digital data allows many texture-capturing possibilities and provides flexibility with regard to pixel resolution, professional illumination, and raw data processing with color management. The 3-D data generated by a monochrome scanning sensor can be complemented with color imagery or with multispectral data, such as UV and IR. The sensor data of previous scanning projects also can be used for texturing with the new module.

The new algorithm maps high-resolution color information to each triangle of the scanned object with subpixel accuracy. The texture resolution is independent from the resolution of the object’s 3-D data, allowing the creation of a reduced point cloud while maintaining a high-resolution texture.
