Weld inspection system finds defects in large, heavy-wall pipe

Xiris Automation Inc. offers the WI-3000 weld inspection system for large, heavy-wall pipes. The laser-based system employs a redesigned sensor head with high-resolution, high-quality optics, states the manufacturer.

Field of view is from 1.38 to 3.94 in. across depending on the model type, allowing for detection of a variety of defect types. The system typically is installed right after the weld head on pipe mills.

With a measurement resolution down to 30 µm, the system can detect such critical defects as fit-up (mismatch), raised/sunken welds, deflection, and freeze line.

It includes a data collection and management system that provides fault and trend reporting for historical auditing purposes, as well as offline data review capability for complete batch production of large pipes.
