Glass fiber weld backing system helps minimize postweld processes

Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® offers Weld Backing Tape™ for the backing of welds when purging is required but is not easily achieved or economically feasible. According to the company, use of the tape allows an increase in welding speeds and results in clean welds that require minimal postweld processes.

The glass fiber weld backing system supports and protects the weld root from oxidation. It traps the inert gas from the weld torch to hold the gas surrounding the weld pool, effectively providing a backpurge facility.

The tape can be used with GMAW, GTAW, and PAW for the joining of all metals. It is available in three grades, each of which comprises a high temperature-resistant aluminum backing foil with a heat-resistant band of woven glass fiber cloth.
