Fronius has developed Virtual Welding, a training tool that consists of a simulated torch and workpiece, a PC, and a screen. The arc and the weld seam are virtual creations. A magnetic tracking system converts hand movements into a virtual world displayed on a screen or 3-D glasses. An extra sensor located on the welding helmet helps ensure that the view of the welding task is true to life. Typical weld seam characteristics are reproduced, and trainees hear typical welding noises in real time. They respond with their hand to develop the required "feel" for voltage and amperage. According to the manufacturer, trainees can deliver usable welding results after a course involving two sessions of 60 hours of practical training on the virtual system. With the product's network capability, training can be done anywhere that is accessible through the Internet.

ESAB Welding & Cutting Products has introduced the LAF DC power sources. The three-phase, fan-cooled DC welding power sources are designed for mechanized SAW or GMAW. They can be used in combination with the company's A2-A6 equipment and A2-A6 process controllers (PEK or PEI). All welding parameters can be monitored and adjusted from the front panel of the process controller. The range of welding current can be extended by connecting two power sources in parallel. The power sources are prepared for communication using most standard protocols, including TCP/IP (LAN), Anybus, Profibus, CAN, or straight communication with a PLC. Optional communications modules also are available.

Lincoln Electric has introduced two push-pull welding gun models for aluminum fabrication and production welding environments. The Panther™ semiautomatic, gooseneck-style gun provides smooth wire feeding with dual-driven rolls for added pulling power without damaging the wire. It also features a full-length, internal wire conduit to minimize aluminum wire shaving. Its Sure Grip&trade handle has a snagproof, rear-mounted trigger and a multi-turn potentiometer to make wire feed speed changes. Its Quick-Mate™ gun cables can be upgraded to different lengths or water-cooled operation. The Cougar™ is a semiautomatic, pistol-grip gun. The handle is balanced to fit in either hand. The refined wire feed speed adjustment features a multi-turn potentiometer that allows both left- and right-handed operators to make wire feed speed changes. A recessed gun trigger configuration helps eliminate accidental breaking.

Fronius has developed the TransSteel 3500 and TransSteel 5000 inverter welding power sources. According to the company, the units' intuitive functions and wire feed system are suited to steel welding. With their compact design and light weight, the power sources are portable. The central control unit helps ensure a reliable process and reproducible welding results, even when process fluctuations occur. The wire feeder comprises a hose pack, torch, and display. A "comfort wire" function automatically takes care of wire threading. The user can remove the portable wire feed unit and take it to difficult-to-access welding locations. The welding parameters remain stable, regardless of the position of the hose pack.An ignition control feature prevents drops from forming at start-up. In addition to the standard arc, the user can select steel root—a fine, soft arc for applications including root runs or wide gap fills—or steel dynamic—a hard, stable spray arc suitable for components requiring a strong joint. The FSC (Fronius System Connector) is one central connector for all media, so there is no need for external control plugs. It is suitable for both manual and robotic applications and with gas- or water-cooled systems.
