Lord Corp. offers Maxlok™, a new acrylic adhesive developed to meet the need for a process-friendly adhesive that will work on various substrates, including unprepared metals. The adhesive is available in three cure speeds, each of which incorporates glass bead technology to help ensure optimum bond line thickness. Gray in color, the adhesive matches or blends with most metals and performs at temperatures ranging from -40 to 300 degrees F. The product offers high adhesion strength without the need for a primer. It resists dilute acids, alkalis, solvents, greases, oils, moisture, weathering, and UV exposure. The adhesive is available in 1.69- and 12.68-fl.-oz. cartridges, as well as bulk packaging.

Kistler has developed the Type 2152B electromechanical NC joining module for applications such as press fitting valve seat rings and valve guides. The module's shape and a center distance of 2.76 in. allow very close spacing of neighboring stations on an assembly line. A high-precision guide helps minimize the amount of space required for mounting. The center distance can be reduced further by pressing eccentrically within the permissible range.Several modules can be assembled into a single joining station. This allows faster throughput by eliminating the need to synchronize several assembly stations. The integral piezoelectric force sensor in the module's housing gives a choice of two predefined measuring ranges of 15 and 25 kN. Stroke is 13.78 in. and speed is up to 9.84 IPS.

Lillbacka Powerco has introduced the Finn-Power 120 UC and 140 UC crimping machines for tube and pipe, hose assemblies, and other fastening and joining applications. These serial production models are designed for high-volume production and accommodate both small and large assemblies. Their pass-through head design makes them suitable for crimping elbow assemblies, flanged pieces, and odd-shaped parts. The crimping machines feature a UC control, which provides automated quality control reporting options and menu-guided operation. The feedback of the master die position allows part crimp dimensions to be changed in seconds, the company reports. The control also includes a feedback device for monitoring the opening stroke to be set to an exact position, reducing energy consumption and improving cycle time. The 120 model provides more than 280 tons of crimping force with a master die travel of 2.68 in. The 140 crimping machine provides more than 320 tons of crimping force with a master die travel of 3.23 in. Both models are accurate and repeatable to 0.004 in.

Sugino Corp. has introduced portable pneumatic drilling units designed for the aerospace industry. The Pneucon Selfeeder™ is designed to provide less than 0.0006-in. T.I.R. and 0.0008-in. repeatability on depths. The prototype units incorporate a requested design feature from the company's field-tested double hydro-speed regulator technology, which produces fine holes without burrs. The rapid approach of the drill is slowed when the primary control feed rate regulator is engaged before entering the part. As the drill approaches its preset depth, the secondary control feed rate regulator further slows the drilling unit to almost eliminate burrs on breakthrough.

The Instrumentation Products Div. of Parker Hannifin has developed a production process for its A-LOK® tube fittings based on stainless steel extrusions. The technology is aimed at users in processing markets such as oil, gas, and chemical.According to the company, the uniformity of metal grain size and shape inside extrusion-based parts means that all fittings made with the process have almost identical mechanical properties and are stronger than traditional forged parts. Dimensions can be very closely controlled to maintain interchangeability for large-scale users. The manufacturer reports that the process is equally applicable to all the exotic-alloy fitting products it supplies for corrosion-resistant applications.Extruded profiles are faster to produce, are available with shorter lead-times, and can typically be produced in smaller batches, the company says.

Stevens Eng. Inc. and Big Kaiser Precision Tooling Inc. have introduced the Unilock starter kit workholding system. The kit allows users to plug the components immediately into their production cell when it supports a Stevens Eng. mounting grid pattern to eliminate setup time. Other grid spacing is available on request. The captured screw and captured dowel assemblies allow the kits to be installed in seconds, the company reports. The kit also contains universal pallets that allow the user to attach and detach positioning and clamping components or workpieces quickly. The system can be used in almost any process to exchange items of all sizes, from small parts and fixtures to workpieces of more than 5,000 lbs.

PEM® SpotFast® fasteners, paired with a specially designed wave washer, allow attachment of two thin metal parts in applications requiring repeatable pivoting or hinging action. These self-clinching fasteners (Type SFW) from PennEngineering® permanently join the two metal components to create a flush-attachment connection without protrusions on either side. The compatible wave washer delivers consistent torsion to promote repeatable hinging action while the attachment remains secure. The steel fasteners have zinc plating with integral lubricant to promote smoother operation. They can join dissimilar metals or sheets with different thicknesses and install in steel or aluminum sheets as thin as 0.031 in. with hardnesses of 80 or less on the Rockwell B scale.Installation is achieved by preparing a properly sized hole in both panels, installing the fastener in one panel, placing the wave washer over the installed fastener, and then situating the second panel over the fastener. Sufficient squeezing force permanently installs the fastener smooth with the top sheet and flush or subflush with the bottom sheet. The wave washer contributes consistent force for rotation of the top sheet. The fastener's flush profile upon installation creates unobtrusive attachment requiring minimal space, the company reports. A smooth surface is retained for finishing, and fasteners can be concealed with paints or powder coatings. The fasteners with wave washers are RoHS-compliant and available in various diameters and sizes. Detailed specifications (Bulletin SFW) and free part drawings (PEM CAD Library) can be accessed at the manufacturer's Web site.

Phoenix Hydraulic Presses recently produced a 25-ton, heavy-duty H-frame shop press to assemble spring-loaded cylinders. The press features an easily adjustable hand winch to change the bed height and control the amount of daylight. A friction brake prevents the bed from dropping and the handle from spinning upon release. The 115-V, single-phase motor is controlled by a remote hand control with a rocker-style switch. The remote, which has a 10-ft. cord, enables the operator to view work from all sides with fingertip control of ram movement. A movable work head permits off-center loading under full capacity along the entire width of the frame. The company also designed tooling that includes a removable bolster plate, a lower spacer, and an upper pusher. The custom guarding comprises Lexan® that covers the sides for clear view of the work area; rear expanded metal; and an electrically interlocked, hinged front guard that allows operator access. The motor is disabled when the guard is opened.Applications include assembly, pressing, pulling, straightening, and lifting. The presses can be customized with add-on features and are available in a number of tonnages.
