Simufact Engineering GmbH has finalized version 9.0 of Simufact.forming simulation software. In this release, dual-solver technology has been developed further and offers users the possibility to access MSC.Marc and MSC.Dytran from MSC Software. The new version focuses on new application modules (open die and radial forging processes, ring rolling, and sheet metal forming) that allow a fully automated process simulation, including optimized meshing strategies. The new ring mesher allows the simulation of any forming process with axial parts. The mesher delivers precise geometry with a minimum of elements, making it suitable for use in rolling processes. The new sheet mesher allows simulation of sheet metal forming, starting with a 3-D CAD model of a blank sheet. Possible applications include forming of sheet metal used in structural components, such as in the automotive industry. This technology, in combination with the available further developments in the definition of complex kinematics, is suitable for use in spin and flow forming processes. The software also offers enhancements for the simulation of cold massive forming.

The Consumable Products Group (CPG) division of Mitsubishi Laser brings the flexibility of today's file-transfer capabilities to Mitsubishi Laser. The Calmotion USBCNC disk reader control acts as an interface between commercially available USB flash memory and any CNC control with an available RS-232 port. Machine tool files can be sent from CNC memory to the USB key, USB key to CNC memory or drip fed (DNC) from the USB key. Flexible DNC firmware is built into the USBCNC unit allowing connection to almost any machine tool CNC control. Many CNC machines have limited memory capacity. In most cases, memory upgrades are prohibitively expensive and in other cases memory upgrades are not available at all. As an alternative to memory upgrades, the USBCNC allows job shops to store large libraries of part programs on a single USB key and to send them to their CNC machine as needed. The USBCNC integral DNC software eliminates having to place a computer with DNC software in a machine shop environment where it can get damaged. Many job shops try to avoid this and place their PC's in a safer location. Doing so, however, increases the risk of communication errors and forces many operators to run at lower baud rates due to long cable runs. Positioning the USBCNC controller close to the control allows the machine to run at its maximum baud rate and eliminates an operator from having to run back and forth, from PC to machine to begin machine operation.

Striker Systems, a sheet metal manufacturing software developer, has announced the release of STRIKER 2010 Sheet Metal CAD/CAM & Nesting.Driven by customer input, STRIKER 2010 offers many enhancements to existing features and introduces new technology. A significant advancement is further refinement of the Ribbon Interface. The Ribbon Interface presents commands in a simplified, structured interface that makes the software easier to learn and easier to use, the company says. One enhancement is the ability to create, track, and nest on irregular shaped (nonrectangular) sheets or plates. The software creates a crop cut to separate the unused portion of a nested sheet. This sheet remnant, regardless of shape, is then placed into inventory for future nesting consideration. A sheet remnant can be assigned to a subsequent nest job by the user or the software can automatically select a sheet remnant when it is determined to deliver the greatest material utilization. The software helps customers reduce scrap by incorporating remnant sheets that might not otherwise be considered for production.

MTC Software, a Hypertherm brand, has launched the latest version of its CAM nesting software, ProNest 2010. The software incorporates improvements to standard features, optional modules, and machine setups. With this version, users have more control when working with CAD files, the company states. Unwanted layers can be deleted, and entities can be reassigned to a different process. A third nesting criteria called Class gives users more control over how a nest is processed. In addition, a new archiving tool allows users to back up settings for safekeeping.Optional modules have been upgraded, including collision avoidance, pipe, plate inventory, skeleton cut-up, and bevel. Machine setups also have been enhanced to help improve cut quality on plasma, laser, and waterjet systems.

Jetcam Intl. has announced the release of version 16.06.00 of Expert CAD/CAM nesting software for punching and profiling machines.Tool teach facilities have been added, which allow the company's Expert Premium systems to learn a user's tooling or profiling preferences. Once the preferences have been learned, further parameters can be applied, such as the ability to allow or deny part mirroring or rotation. All subsequent parts that are tooled in the future that require the saved tooling style then can be processed automatically.Import filters are available for SolidEdge®, SolidWorks®, and Autopol CAD systems. When used in conjunction with the company's automated features such as SCAP (single component automatic processing), the user can import, tool, and nest complete directories of CAD files and generate NC code.Finishing cut sequences have been enhanced with features such as separate horizontal and vertical settings for start corner and direction. Other features include web nesting, a number of machine-specific features, and support for several new machines. The new version is available free to all customers with a current maintenance contract.

MTC Software has updated and enhanced its drill, tap, and spindle operation support for ProNest, the company's nesting software for sheet and plate processing. The specialized plug-in was developed specifically to handle the requirements of plasma and oxyfuel cutting machines that incorporate drilling, tapping, and other spindle operation capability. The updated system provides specialized sorting of the part spindle operations, as well as tool change and cycle parameter support.Predrill pierce locations allows users to add drilled holes automatically at the pierce locations of all cut profiles. Auto-select tool tolerance matches the drills and taps found in the nest with the tools in the integrated customizable tooling library. Operations such as counterboring and countersinking now can be controlled from the CAD file through the use of blocks.Multistep operations that use multiple tools at variable depths now can be defined in the tooling library and called out in a CAD file by adding "Block" at the desired location. CAD colors are used to automatically convert round holes found on the turret layer of the nest into a fine or coarse tap instruction. Predrills for taps are specified automatically in the tooling library. A flexible parameter file is used to automatically specify the spindle speed, feedrate, and other cycle parameters for each tool operation for every material type and thickness.
