Exact Metrology Inc. has introduced the MH 3-D scanner from Artec. The lightweight, hand-held 3-D scanner allows users to scan target objects from any angle. The scanner requires no mounts or markers. It works like a regular video camera, but instead of a 2-D image, the result is a 3-D image captured at speeds of up to 15 surfaces per second. The user walks around the object and scans it from various angles, while the accompanying software combines all the scanned images into one. The scanner is equipped with wide-field-of-view 3-D and megapixel 2-D sensors. It captures both the shape and surface texture of an object in a snapshot or video mode.

Pilz offers the PSENvip camera-based protection system for visual monitoring of press brake bending processes. When installed on the upper die of a press brake, the system detects even small foreign bodies in the protected field between the transmitter and receiver. It also records control data from the bending process. The system's compact PSS control system monitors and evaluates safety-related control functions, as well as press, safety, and retaining valves for the slide. BG- and TÃœV-approved software and function blocks provide for common safety control and monitoring functions. The user just adds plant-specific parameters. The integrated display enables the user to adapt the fields for box bending, backgauge mode, and tool change. Integrated overrun measurement eliminates the need for additional components such as cams. If the overrun is exceeded, the system is locked.

WARDJet offers a waterjet system with a digitizing capability, allowing reverse engineering of physical parts that have no drawings or electron files. Large parts can be laid on the waterjet table, and the waterjet memorizes the part profile. With the X series controller, the waterjet cutting head or a laser alignment guide mounted near the cutting head can be used to record the X, Y, and Z coordinates of a part. The user clicks "Teach New Part" on the controller screen to start mapping the part geometry. Both lines and arcs can be taught. If further cleanup is needed, the CNC file can be brought into a CAD/CAM program.

Metal chips can be a problem in long travel or gliding cable carrier applications. To combat this, igus® has developed Guidelok, a horizontal guiding system designed for cable carriers in the machine tool industry in long travel applications up to 164 feet (50 meters). The system's open trough design allows debris and chips to fall straight through. The cable carrier is kept in place by a spring-loaded roller support, which is pushed back as the cable carrier passes through, before snapping out again after the carrier's radius has passed. The upper run then rests on the roller support. With the system, the cable carrier can support itself over a longer distance, enabling users to choose a smaller version for the given length, saving overall costs, and reducing the required push-/pull driving force. Guidelok keeps the upper and lower runs of the cable carrier separate from one another, which helps to minimize friction and wear and increases service life.A video of this modular system can be found here.

igus®, a manufacturer of cable carrier systems for automated machinery, has developed the RX energy tube especially for the machine-tool industry that is almost 100 percent chip proof. The tube, which the company reports is airtight, protects cables and connected parts from metal chips and other debris..The tube can be opened easily using a screwdriver to unscrew bolts integrated into the out radius of each link. It also has a large interior space that can be separated using vertical separators and a horizontal shelf to safely route cables and hoses and prevent abrasion. The new energy tube is well suited to short, self-supporting lengths inside tooling machines. The chip-proof carrier also is designed to be used in reverse bending radius (RBR) applications. The tube is available in a high-temperature version, made from igumid HT. This version ensures that even red-hot chips up to 1,562 degrees Fahrenheit fall off the tube rather than melt onto it. The enclosed cable carriers also can be delivered as preassembled ReadyChains®; harnessed with cables, hoses, and internal separators.

Hybrid linear bearing combines rolling, sliding

The DryLin® WJRM hybrid bearing from igus®, a manufacturer of cable carrier systems for automated machinery, has developed with the goal of reducing driving force, especially in applications involving the manual adjustment of machine-guard doors, partitions, and adjustable locks, or for light-handling tasks. To accomplish this, the company took the advantages unique to sliding and rolling movements and combined them.A self-lubricating plastic, sliding sleeve bearing ensures the hybrid linear system is robust, dirt and moisture resistant, lightweight, and economical. A maintenance-free polymer roller that carries the main load reduces driving force requirements by a factor of 4 to 5 and makes heavy applications, such as manually closing machine doors up to 110 lbs., easier, the company says. With a housing made from blue-chromed die-cast zinc, the new bearing is the latest extension to the company's DryLin W guide line. The compact system is constructed so that the rollers fit inside the linear profile without increasing the height, which remains at a low profile of 0.71 in. Standard linear guide profiles can be used and are available in three styles for shaft diameters of 0.39 in., as individual rails for more flexibility and as double rails for quick installation without time-consuming alignment. The latter comes with a distance between rails of 1.57 in. or 3.15 in.DryLin W is a flexible, modular linear guide system made from hard-anodized aluminum profiles, die-cast zinc housings, stainless steel or aluminum and plastic plain bearing materials. The wide variety of different combinations within this easy-to-install system allows users to optimize available design space. The linear guides work without lubrication as dry-running systems and do not require maintenance during operation. They use plastic liners made from iglide® J or iglide J200, both of which are low-wear and have a low coefficient of friction. They also are chemical-resistant, vibration-dampening, and absorb negligible amounts of moisture.

igus® Inc. has announced the launch of a new E-Chain® Configurator program that enables users to custom build a cable carrier with cables and internal separators online quickly. The user then can generate CAD files and a parts list, or submit a quote request directly to igus. The program is designed to fill the company's E-Chain cable carriers, which were developed to guide and protect moving cables on automated machinery. Interior separators, shelves, cables, and hoses can be virtually installed in a few clicks. A complete Energy Chain System® can be configured in just minutes.Users simply choose the desired type, inner width, bending radius, and length of the cable carrier. On the second screen, side plates, separators, and spacers can be dragged and dropped into the interactive chain link. The bending radius, length, and quantity of cables and hoses also can be entered, before being pulled into the cross section with the cursor. The cable carrier configurator is designed to be as simple as possible. An integrated control device does not allow component parts to be dragged into the chain link anywhere they will not work. This eliminates the potential for error. The company's technical team also is always on hand to work on later optimizations to the generated configuration, if required. The E-Chain Configurator is available online at www.igus.com/configurator.asp.

Advanced Machine & Eng. Co. has introduced the AMLOK® RLN series power-off pneumatic rod lock to help solve problems of overtraveling, drifting, bouncing, and reverse traveling. The rod lock can be mounted to a NFPA cylinder or as a stand-alone unit.It is constructed of a black anodized aluminum housing with a piston and wedge-locking mechanism actuated by multiple springs that mechanically lock the rod quickly and securely. The clamp is unlocked when air actuates the piston, compresses the spring, and releases the locking device. The large clamping surface reduces pressure per square inch on the rod to help extend service life. Clamping force is consistent in both directions. Several NFPA-style mounting attachments are available for stand-alone applications.

Mod Tech Industries Inc. has released the Air Assist Movement (AAM) system, designed to help increase the productivity and throughput of CMMs. The system comprises two plates, locator stops, bumpers or guide rails, an air supply, and controls. The system allows for one manufactured part to be measured on a plate while another product is being set up on a second plate at the same time. When the first part has been measured, it is moved from the measuring location to its home position by floating on a cushion of air. The second plate then is relocated to the measuring location by the same process, leaving the first plate available for another part setup. This process of exchange continues in an alternate sequence for as many like parts or different parts as there are to be measured. With the recommended air supply, a plate can lift and move more than 500 lbs., making it adaptable for use on most CMMs.
