T.J. Snow Co., Chattanooga, Tenn., now offers a resistance welding system with electrically operated linear servo actuators designed to eliminate problems associated with pneumatic systems. The user-friendly servo system can be used on standard AC welders and on machines with newer MFDC inverter-type supplies.According to the company, the system generates weld force instantly; lowers operating costs by eliminating the need for compressed air; improves weld force repeatability; and has a slow-approachfeature that minimizes electrode wear and improves weld appearance. It includes built-in monitors for verifying proper part stack-up and monitoring electrode wear, a set-down monitor with programmable limits for projection welding, and a retractable stroke function.Requiring a simple two-step process, the system features a heavy-duty, long-life roller screw servo design that provides up to 5,000 lbs. of weld force. Absolute encoder feedback lets the servo know its exact position, even on power up.As each weld is made, the current, force, and set-down values are logged and stored on a compact flash card for documentation purposes. Data can be exported in an Excel format through copy and paste, or automatically via an FTP server. The system also can automatically generate e-mails to designated personnel when certain faults occur. The system also has built-in part and tip wear counters.Current, force, travel, set-down, and counters can be viewed from the main interface screen during the process.

Huntingdon Fusion Techniques Ltd. (HFT) has introduced the KR1000 robot cell resistance welder electrode force gauge, designed to obtain correct weld parameters for standard and critical welds in automotive manufacturing. The gauges can be mounted in robotic cells used by car manufacturers and their Tier-1 and -2 suppliers to check weld gun electrode force automatically. The force gauge head is intended to work only with robots that have Bosch welding controllers. It also is intended to be a direct plug-and-play replacement for other electronic force gauges. This instrument is certified as Class III and calibrated to National Physical Laboratory Standards using traceable equipment with an accuracy rated as typically 0.5 percent or less of the 1,000-kg full scale. The NBT 1000 interface allows operators to attach the gauge to any robotic cell.

LORS Machinery Inc. has been appointed by Koyo Giken Inc. as an authorized factory direct importer and distributor of Koyo's MYSPOT resistance welding systems.Allowing a single operator to weld large workpieces, the patented system incorporates a copper-alloy welding/worktable and an articulated welding arm with a spot weld gun. The table helps to provide an improved weld appearance on the finish side of the workpiece, the company reports. The system utilizes three-phase, middle-frequency inverter technology and features a simplified, preprogrammed microprocessor welding control. The control automatically selects optimal welding parameters for time, current intensity, and weld force. It also verifies water flow to ensure proper water cooling of the equipment. An antioxidation system produces clean welds with no burn marks on the finish side of stainless steel assemblies.

The Force/Torque Div. of PCB® Piezotronics Inc. has introduced M240 ICP® strain sensors that use piezoelectric sensing elements to indirectly measure dynamic and quasistatic forces on machinery structures. The strain sensors have no moving parts and are not susceptible to fatigue or sensitivity changes throughout millions of cycles. In typical applications, upper and lower control limits are set to follow a desired force curve for the process, and if the actual force curve deviates from the control limits, the process is shut down. This prevents the acceptance of nonconforming parts as finished goods.Applications include clinching, crimping, metal forming, pressing, punching, spot welding, stamping, and automatic assembly operations. The sensors can be powered by any ICP sensor signal conditioner.
