Roll-Kraft has released a portable hemming unit. The machine forms 180-degree hems on the edges of a flat strip of metal. Hems are found primarily on lighter-gauge material to strengthen the profile or improve safety in handling.Typically, the hems are formed before the metal strip is introduced into the roll forming mill or another forming process. Most hems are small and can be formed in four stations.Hemming units can be configured as nondriven (pull-through) or driven (with overriding clutch or continuous drive), mounted directly onto the existing roll former base or freestanding, with variable product widths and producing a single or double hem.

Dreistern's Start-Stop® technology provides precision roll formed parts at high production speeds. In the Start-Stop mode, the advancing profile is stopped briefly during the cutoff and punching operations, after which the profile is accelerated to normal operating speed. All punching cutoff tools are stationary. The tool designer does not have to make any compromises because of weight limitations for the tool, the company reports. The process provides high production output rates for short-length sections—60 sections per minute is normal. High-performance lines reach 120 sections per minute. The roll former's drive system catapults the profile to a speed of 3,937 IPM.

Tru-Tech Tool & Machine Corp. has developed the Drop In Quick Change, a roll forming machine that allows three methods for changeover from one set of roll tooling to another. In one method, the system removes individual raft plates with four stations each, complete with tooling. The second method removes existing shafts with rolls, spacers, and gear and replaces them with the next complete set of shafts, rolls, spacers, and gears. Ten stations take approximately 20 minutes for complete changeover. In the third method the system swaps out rolls and spacers using existing shafts and gears.Another feature allows the user to float an entire station in seconds. The machine is designed for light-gauge CRS.
