5 steps to modernizing your old press brake
- By Bill Helinski
- Nov 29, 2017
- Article
A press brake is a press brake is a press brake, right? Nothing can be done to update it? Wrong! Many press brake owners find themselves in a predicament about what to do with their old press brakes. They’re caught between selling and moving the old machine and installing a new one. A cost-effective approach is to increase the productivity of an existing, properly functioning press brake by retrofitting it with features that can help reduce setup time, scrap, and operator fatigue.

Extend the life of a hydraulic press or replace it?
- By Chris Robinson
- Nov 23, 2017
- Article
If your hydraulic press has stopped coming down to a repeatable depth, the electrical system keeps shorting out, and so much fluid is leaking from the power unit onto the material that customers are rejecting product, it’s time to perform a health checkup on it. Here are some parameters for knowing whether it’s best to refurbish it or replace it.

Protect stamping dies with ion/plasma nitriding
- By Drew Hutchison, Edward Rolinski, Gary Sharp, and Mikel Woods
- Nov 23, 2017
- Article
New generations of advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) used in the auto industry create great challenges for stamping tools used in those applications because the stress required to induce sufficient plastic deformation in steel with tensile strengths as high as 1,800 MPa is as much as 400 megapascals. Chromium plating has been used successfully to protect stamping dies for many years. However, chromium plating’s limitations seem to be more pronounced as AHSS become harder. In recent years a technique called ion/plasma nitriding has been successful in surface hardening of those tools and dies. This is especially true when the cast materials are alloyed with chromium, molybdenum, and other elements, which form very stable and hard nitrides.
