The U.S. Department of Commerce has concluded its investigation into whether foreign steel imports are threatening the vitality of domestic steel producers, resulting in a possible threat to national security. President Trump is expected to deliver his final opinions on possible trade penalties by mid-April.

In early December the U.S. Department of Commerce ruled in favor of domestic steelmakers that claimed that China was rerouting steel through Vietnam to evade trade penalties levied against the country in 2016. With penalties now being applied to this Vietnam-source steel, fabricators might be facing more robust domestic steel pricing in 2018. And that does not take into consideration the results of a Section 232 investigation that may buoy the domestic steel industry even more.

Trump administration considers new tariffs on Chinese aluminum

During his campaign for president, Donald Trump was not quiet about his desire to improve the U.S. trade deficit with its trading partners. In particular, he railed against China on a regular basis. He remains focused on this task, and in late November he asked the U.S. Department of Commerce to begin an investigation into the possible dumping of certain aluminum stock into the U.S. market. If trade penalties result from this investigation, domestic manufacturers may be forced to pay more for aluminum in late 2018 or early 2019.
