Dizzying proliferation of auto players influences press expansion
- By Kate Bachman
- Sep 27, 2017
- Blog Post
When one of the largest, most prominent, high-tech metal stamping press OEMs sites its annual conference at a lab devoted to plastic composites development for the automotive industry, it gives you pause. Then again, if a vacuum maker, a computer maker, and a search engine company can manufacture a car and an online commerce company can go into the grocery business, is it really such a stretch for a stamping manufacturer to produce plastic, compression-molded components on a hydraulic press?

Press brake basics: Bending across the hem
- By Steve Benson
- Sep 18, 2017
- Article
How do you calculate the bend functions for parts that involve hems as well as bends across those hems? A hem has a specific elongation factor. Otherwise, you run the calculations and determine the bend lines as you would for any other part.

R&D Update: Processes for hydroforming sheet metal, Part II
- Sep 18, 2017
- Article
In sheet hydroforming with a punch (SHF-P), the female die used in conventional stamping is replaced by a pressure pot. The sheet is deep-drawn to form over the punch surface, against a counter pressure in the pressure pot generated by a pressurizing fluid (see Figure 1 ). The operator can...

Press brake strategies: Boosting forming throughput
- Sep 13, 2017
- Article
Boosting bending throughput requires a holistic approach. It’s not just about tool changeover, tryout bends, retrieving blanks, or delivering formed parts to the next operation. It’s about all of the above and more.

R&D Update: Processes for hydroforming sheet metal, Part I
- Sep 13, 2017
- Article
Metal forming using liquid media, or hydroforming, is broadly classified into sheet and tube hydroforming (see Figure 1 ). Sheet hydroforming is further classified into sheet hydroforming with a punch (SHF-P) and sheet hydroforming with a die (SHF-D), depending on whether a male (punch) or a...

The story behind the light curtain on the press brake
Alaso, a Lakeland, Fla.-based manufacturer of commercial chicken housing systems, was looking for a way to boost bending productivity without putting press brake operators in harm's way. It found its answer with an electric press brake with a built-in light curtain. The bending technology, while off-putting at first, is now embraced by even the most veteran of brake operators.

R&D Update: Warm-forming and magnesium , Part II
- Sep 12, 2017
- Article
Tensile testing is used to determine material properties and the quality of incoming sheet. Despite the fact that it obtains properties only uniaxially, this test has been widely adopted by the industry. Stress conditions in stamping, however, are not uniaxial. Because of the tensile test’s...

Hardness tests measure indentation resistance, not sheet steel formability
- By Daniel J. Schaeffler
- Sep 11, 2017
- Article
Hardness testing is appropriate for use with tool and die components, where resistance to indentation can help judge one of the potential component failure modes. In sheet metals, the failure condition is usually the beginning of a neck (also called a smile) generated in tensile conditions. When stamped sheet metal fails, it is usually unrelated to the degree to which it can handle a hard ball pressing into it.

Evaluating dry film lubricants for automotive applications Part I
- Sep 9, 2017
- Article
In recent studies, dry-film lubricants have been shown to give better lubrication conditions compared to oil-based liquid lubricants. This factor, as well as savings in the amount of lubricant used, has helped increase the use of dry-film lubricants in the automotive industry for forming of aluminum and high-strength steel stamped parts.
