- Shop Management
- Article
One aspect of the welding industry remains challenging for company management: determining staffing levels for tradespeople and supervisors at the front lines of industrial manufacturing systems and construction projects. While many people do not like crunching basic numbers, nothing beats simple math to come up with money-saving options to get through those tough economic times. The good news is that this is not rocket science. In fact, the number-crunching is so simple that it can be done quickly without any brain-numbing work.

2015 updates for ISO 9001, 14001 align with other standards
- By Kate Bachman

- Shop Management
- Article
In September 2015, the widely recognized global standards body International Organization for Standardization (ISO) released its 9001:2015 standards for quality management systems (QMS) and 14001:2015 environmental management systems (EMS). Key changes to both the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards are that they are structured to align with other standards bodies; are less prescriptive; require greater upper management involvement; and require less documentation but more emphasis on defining processes, risk and opportunities planning, and context.

Troubleshooting sheet metal defects: Part I
- By Daniel J. Schaeffler
- Jan 20, 2016
- Metals/Materials
- Article
Before a manufacturer can figure out what’s wrong with metal that keeps splitting during a forming process, it needs to understand just why one batch of sheet metal differs from another. The first step is learning the lingo associated with metal creation.
Sound waves determine weld soundness
- By Seth McGuire
- Jan 19, 2016
- Tube and Pipe Production
- Article
Traditional ultrasonic systems use piezoelectric transducers to generate sounds waves and a couplant—a liquid—to provide a pathway for the sound waves to pass from the transducer to the material under test. An electromagnetic acoustic transducer is an alternative technology, one that uses two electromagnets to generate the sound wave in the part to be inspected. This eliminates the couplant, which can interfere with the test process.

Metallurgy Matters: Thermal cycles, the HAZ, and the strength of martensite
- By Bob Capudean
- Jan 18, 2016
- Metals/Materials
- Article
Last time we looked at how welding heat influences the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of metals strengthened by three typical hardening processes: solid-solution hardening, cold working, and precipitation hardening. That leaves one critical strengthening process to consider: transformation (martensite)...

Ask the Stamping Expert: Should light curtains stop a press even if it is traveling up?
- By Thomas Vacca
- Jan 8, 2016
- Bending and Forming
- Article
Q: We have some manual presses set up in a single part load-and-stamp production mode. The press is equipped with light curtains. When the operator activates the press buttons, he has to wait until the tool runs through the entire press cycle before he can reach into the work area. If he tries to...
