A welding ventilation overview
- By Benjamin Howell
- Aug 25, 2015
- Safety
- Article
Incredibly high temperatures and a bright arc flash aren’t the only two dangerous elements of welding. Harmful ultrafine particulate matter generated during welding operations can pose major health risks to welders. Modern extraction and filtration systems are designed to provide effective industrial safety. In many cases, fabricators find that the added filtration equipment contributes to increased productivity as well.

When oilfield components and systems supplier Tri-Alta used an old manual band saw for cutting tube to length, it experienced no shortage of difficulties in blade failures, inaccurate cuts, and part misalignment. The company invested in a modern band saw from Behringer with automated downfeed pressure sensing, blade tension monitoring, and a material handling system.

The best of both worlds
Typically, fabricators have had to choose between an aggressive cutting disc that is thrown away at the end of each shift or a long-lived disc that usually doesn't cut as well and causes the operator to push more while handling the power tool. Weiler Corp. has developed its X3 technology to bridge that gap.

The Minneapolis manufacturing facility for Unison Comfort Technologies was being stretched to the limits trying to keep up with orders for its HVAC products. New fabricating technology was seen as the only way to meet current production needs and add capacity, but the company needed a new approach to its part flow as well if it were to make the most of any reshuffling of the shop floor.

Safe and round with tube and pipe handling?
- By Douglas Raff
- Aug 4, 2015
- Safety
- Article
Worker safety in U.S. manufacturing facilities has improved greatly over the past 25 years, but it's amazing the dangers that still exist in some operations. Tube and pipe facilities actually represent a segment of the fabricating world where some of these risks are most obvious. A look at a couple of tube and pipe scenarios proves what some companies try to get away with and how those safety risks can easily be addressed.
