Finalists chosen for contest to design a deployable mechanical ventilator

Seven finalists in contest to design a mechanical ventilator come from around the world

According to the sponsors of the CoVent-19 Challenge—a contest to design a simple, easy-to-manufacture ventilator—213 designs were submitted during the first round. Engineers, innovators, educators, health care workers, and students from 43 countries participated.

Seven teams were named May 5 to participate in Round 2. Functioning prototypes must be submitted June 1, when the winning design will be announced.

The sponsors, Massachusetts General Hospital, Stratasys Inc., and Ximedica LLC,report that the seven designs were chosen because they best met the technical requirements, level of complexity, clinical effectiveness, functionality, and likelihood of success.

Following are the seven selected teams along with renderings and brief descriptions of their designs. Complete design details are available at GrabCAD. (All images were downloaded from the CoVent-19 website.)
