Additive manufacturing-specific aluminum powder introduced

additive manufacturing

According to NanoAL, parts printed with Addalloy 5T powders have properties that exceed those made with incumbent aluminum-silicon-based powders. NanoAL

NanoAL LLC, a materials research and technology company dedicated to developing high-performance aluminum alloys based on scientifically designed nanostructures, has developed the Addalloy family of powdered aluminum alloys. The Boston company says it Addalloy 5T was developed specifically for laser-powder-bed-fusion metal additive manufacturing.

According to the company, 5T is 100% pre-alloyed, which eliminates secondary powder treatments or blends and simplifies its use. It performs to high standards without expensive alloying elements or the addition of ceramic particles. And, unlike conventional 5000-series alloys, the company reports that Addalloy 5T is formulated to be precipitation-strengthened with simple thermal treatments after fabrication.

The powders work with major laser-based OEM platforms for metal 3D printing, including EOS, Renishaw, and Concept Laser.
