The Chiron Group has developed the AM Cube, a 3D metal printer for manufacturing large, complex components. It is suitable for coating and repairing components and printing near-net-shape parts.

The machine is based on a conventional cartesian coordinate system, like a CNC machining center. It is programmed using either a standardized DIN ISO code or, for complex components, a CAD/CAM software tool.

The three printheads can be changed during an active printing or coating process to enable the combination of different properties in a single workpiece. For instance, one printhead can be used to achieve a high surface quality, and another can be used to achieve a high deposition rate.
