Still Building America—Craig Thompson’s advice: Simply do something

Craig Thompson, Mayhem Garage, at work.

I love hearing stories about how one generation has been influenced by the one before to carry the proverbial and literal torch. Craig Thompson, “Mikey Mayhem,” hails from a long line of automotive enthusiasts and fabricators and now owns his own off-road chassis fabrication business.

JW: Could you explain what kind of work you do and what got you started?

CT: I’m 24 years old and work in the off-road chassis fabrication industry. I grew up around cars and trucks; they’ve always been a huge part of my life, as my family has been car fanatics for generations. But the sheer thrill of building and creating something from nothing is what truly inspires me. I now own my own business, Mayhem Garage, Concord, N.C.

JW: Who were your career influences, and who has impacted your life?

CT: I would say that my dad was the most influential. The crazy ideas he has had and what he has actually followed through with have taught me that anything you put your mind to is truly possible. I would also have to say that Dave VanHouten has made a big impact on my life. He is a standup guy and a phenomenal welder/fabricator.

JW: What type of background and training do you have?

CT: Most of my knowledge in fabrication stems from my upbringing. My dad was self-employed. So, every day after school I spent time out in the shop, watching, learning, thinking, and dreaming. I did, however, also attend a local vocational school for welding and fabrication. I learned numerous tips and tricks from Dave VanHouten as well.

JW: What is your favorite part of your job?

CT: My favorite part about my job is that no two days are ever alike. Every day is a new challenge that brings a new feeling of accomplishment. I’ve gotten to work on quite a few radical trucks, but my favorite recent project is a ʼ66 Chevy C10 lowrider for which I did a custom cantilever air ride setup.

JW: What is the most challenging part of your job?

CT: Not having adequate workspace to work efficiently!

JW: What's your future career goal?

CT: My goals are simply to give myself and others enjoyment from my work. Of course, I would also like for my business to flourish and to bring many new adventures my way.

JW: What advice would you give to your peers?

CT: My advice is simple. As a wise man once told me, “If you do nothing, nothing will happen.” So, simply do something; put forth a valid effort and you will be rewarded.

JW: That’s pretty solid! Thanks, man!
