Water Soluble Purge Dams Made Easy

The objective of pipe purging is to shield the back of the joint from atmospheric contamination. It is a two-stage operation, involving pre-purge and purging during welding. The pre-purge displaces air inside a pipe with an inert gas; the purge during welding maintains the oxygen free backing gas achieved by the pre-purge and prevents air ingress into the system.

Effectiveness of purging depends upon:

- an oxygen content inside the pipe that can be tolerated by the material during welding, without detrimentally affecting joint performance.

- the purge gas containment system.

- pipe diameter, pre-purge gas flow rate and the pre-purge time

With Aquasol, it only takes five easy steps to build a water soluble purge dam.

Step 1.

Cut the Aquasol water soluble paper into a circle with a diameter about 1.3 times the inner diameter of the pipe.  In a shop environment, trace the pipe's inner diameter on the paper and fold on this line to form a 90º lip. In the field, impress the pipe's inner diameter on the paper and fold on this line to form a 90º lip. Insert the dam into the pipe with the lip toward the weld preparation.

And, if you use Aquasol EZ PurgeT, the process is much easier.  Aquasol's patented  EZ PurgeT is the MOST efficient and economical purge dam alternative available because it is  pre-formed, self-adhesive and simply - ready to use.  Welders are not required to cut; form and tape purge dams in place when TIG welding steel or aluminum pipes.

Simply insert the EZ PurgeT dam into the pipe  with the lip toward the weld preparation. Peel off backing and tape in place.  Now, your purge dam is complete in less than a minute! It is so easy. EZ PurgeT allows the welder to expedite set up and completion.

Step 2.

Peel Aquasol water soluble tape from backing and tape in place.

Step 3.

Punch a small hole in the dam to facilitate the evacuation of air when purging.  Or, if you prefer, simply allow the air to escape through the root gap opening.

Step 4

Place EZ Zone T Tape over the root gap to contain gas.

Step 5

After dams are in place and the aluminum EZ Zone T Tape is secured over the root gap,  Argon may be introduced through the root gap with a purge needle connected to a gas line.  Next, admire the completed Aquasol purge dam.

Aquasol Paper and Tape and EZ PurgeT  make purging simple. Once the weld is complete, unlike any other purging materials, Aquasol Paper And Tape and EZ PurgeT dissolve instantaneously with no residue.
