S.A.F.E. Structure Designs completes project at Shenango River Dam

Las Vegas-based S.A.F.E. Structure Designs has announced the completion of its project for the U.S. Army Corps at Shenango River Dam in Hermitage, Pa. With the help of Noble Supply & Logistics providing rapid contracting services, S.A.F.E. designed, engineered, manufactured, and installed a custom stairway.

The stairway spans 55 ft. from the top of an embankment down to the riverbed to provide access to the shoreline downstream of the dam. Massive concrete pads more than 25 ft. deep and 8 ft. wide hold the stairs solidly in place. At the base, a concrete pad with steel rods was driven deep into the rock bed to hold the 10,600-lb. stairway.

The stairs were welded as one solid piece and were lifted in place by a 100,000-lb. crane that had to be disassembled, transported, and reassembled on location because it was too heavy to cross a local, small steel bridge.
