Dutch company offers stunning titanium and gold 3D-printed fountain pens

Pjotr’s latest 3D-printed fountain pen, the Meteor, is available for 735 euros ($835).

The printing press owes its existence to quills, sharpened reeds, styluses, and other early writing instruments. If people hadn’t learned to write with such devices in the pre-Gutenburg era, it’s hard to imagine that the onetime German blacksmith would have invented the printing press.

Now, in a nifty turnaround, some of today’s writing instruments wouldn’t exist without printing. A growing number of companies are 3D printing pens.

Pjotr Pens belongs to this group. The Dordrecht, Netherlands, company began 3D printing pens in 2013, the year it built the world’s first additively manufactured fountain pen. Three years later it introduced the first 3D-printed nib.

In November, the company brought to market the limited-edition Meteor pen. Its 3D-printed nib is built from titanium, and the barrel, cap, and clip are solid titanium or stainless steel.

Prices for the Meteor start at 735 euros ($835) and are available from La Couronne du Comte, Tilburg, Netherlands.

La Couronne offers three other Pjotr fountain pens: Spica Virginis, 2,490 euros ($2,825); Spica Virginis Gold, 4,960 euros ($5,620); and Cavalary (price available upon request).

Any of them would be highly appreciated by that special additive-manufacturing engineer or editor on your holiday gift list.
