Materials Solutions—A Siemens Business, announced the re-opening of its Worcester, U.K., plant. Siemens invested 30 million euros ($34 million) overhauling the factory, which, according to a press release, “industrializes additive manufacturing.”
The digitalized, 4,500-square-meter (48,440-sq.-ft.) facility boasts R&D, production, and post-processing under one roof. The manufacturing capacity has been more than doubled, to 50 3D printers arranged in flexible cells.
Materials Solutions, which Siemens acquired a majority share in two years ago, has more than 10 years’ experience with metal AM and manufactures more than 2,000 parts annually. The company specializes in 3D printing aerospace and automotive components from high-performance materials.
By employing industrial methods to scale up production, Siemens expects to “bring down the costs of AM by manufacturing high-end, complex metal parts in serial production in a robust industrial environment,” says the company.
