University of Memphis opens metal additive manufacturing lab

The University of Memphis has opened a new metal additive manufacturing lab as part of its Herff College of Engineering.

"This will be the region's first 3-D metal printing facility at an educational institution, and it will enable the university to perform cutting-edge research while also preparing graduates to meet the needs of our manufacturing partners,” said Dean Richard Sweigard. “Additionally, the lab will provide new opportunities for researchers campus-wide to incorporate 3-D metal printing into their work."

The university has committed $2 million for building renovations, equipment, and staffing.
