Markforged, a manufacturer of metal and carbon-fiber 3D printers, has introduced a flame-retardant material intended for use by industries such as aerospace, automotive, defense, and electronics.
The self-extinguishing Onyx FR composite, which is only compatible with the company’s industrial 3D printers, has a UL94 V-0 rating.
“Onyx FR opens up more applications for 3D printing ... because it meets higher fire safety standards,” said the Watertown, Mass., company’s VP of product, Jon Reilly. “When these parts are reinforced with strands of continuous-carbon fiber, they are as strong as aircraft-grade aluminum at half the weight.”
