  1. A category of a punch and die which is designed to penetrate (cut) material out of the sheet metal being run through the punch and die; cut material into a desired shape; or cut material away from the edge of a workpiece. As the punch penetrates the material, compressive and tensile stresses build up and fracture occurs along the lines of stress.
