ASTM presents Award of Merit to Michael Gold

ASTM Intl. Committee A01 on Steel, Stainless Steel and Alloys, W. Conshohocken, Pa., has presented consultant Michael Gold of Gold Metallurgical Services LLC, North Benton, Ohio, with the ASTM Award of Merit.

The Award of Merit, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM's highest recognition for individual contributions to standards activities. Gold was honored for his significant service to Committee A01 in the standardization of steel plates for boilers and pressure vessels, castings for special applications, and steel forgings for wrought fittings.

A member of ASTM Intl. since 1979, Gold is active on several A01 subcommittees. The committee honored him with an Award of Appreciation in 2001 and the Award of Excellence in 2007.

A graduate of Yale University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in physics and a master's degree in metallurgy, Gold specializes in materials applications for boilers and pressure vessels, including procurement, production, design limits, fabrication, and failure analysis.

Gold spent 37 years as a senior metallurgist at Babcock & Wilcox Research Center in Alliance, Ohio, and as manager of materials technology and standards in the Babcock & Wilcox Fossil Power Generation Division in Barberton, Ohio. He began his consultancy work after his retirement from the company in 2002.
