Aircraft bookings boost durable goods orders in January; excluding transportation, orders show largest decline in two years

New orders for manufactured durable goods in January increased $5.3 billion or 2.7 percent to $200.5 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This increase followed three consecutive monthly decreases including a 0.4 percent December decrease.

Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 3.6 percent, the largest decline in two years. Big declines were seen in orders for machinery, computers, and communications equipment.

Excluding defense, new orders increased 1.9 percent.
