- Machining
Available in seven sizes from 31.5 in. to 102 in. swing, the VDM series of conventional vertical lathes from Knuth Machine Tools USA feature heavy-duty construction designed with fine-grain castings, a substantial headstock, heavy machine bed, and wide box ways.
The machine, equipped for OD/ID turning, features a vertical ram with a 5-station toolholder and a horizontal side ram with a 4-position toolholder. The adjustable spindle runs in a high-precision, two-row roller bearing. Its reduction gear drive ensures high torque. Spindle motors are available up to 50 HP on the VDM 2600. Machining heights up to 59 in. are standard, with extended column options available for more height capacity. The maximum part weight capacity is more than 22,000 lbs.
The series includes various models that feature an inverter-controlled turntable, which provides infinitely variable speeds in four gear ranges from 1.2 to 315 RPM. The machines have a newly designed control panel with a 3-axis digital readout and a spindle speed display. They now are available with optional full enclosures, turntable enclosures, and chip conveyors.
