Applications: CNC cutting machine spurs growth at welding and fabricating company

Situation
Located in Denver, Mountain Man Welding & Fabrication offers on-site welding, specializing in carbon and stainless steel piping. The company has played an integral role in the construction and repair of oil and gas rigs, water pipelines, and treatment facilities.
In addition, its fabrication shop offers steel fabrication; custom sheet metal forming, rolling, and cutting; and arc welding, GMAW, and GTAW. The firm cuts base plates, gussets, and stainless steel for its customers and produces custom artwork and logo work for a variety of clients.
Outdated cutting technology caused Mountain Man to suffer from inefficient material handling processes.
“Before, we had to use the shearer to cut plates, or we had to flame-cut them if thicker than ½ in., then drill the holes,” said Master Welder Rick Sublette.
Resolution
The company purchased a Hornet Plasma Table CNC cutting machine from Hornet Cutting Systems. As a result, material handling now is much more efficient. Mountain Man has increased the capacity and thickness of the materials it can cut. Cutting holes rather than drilling them has proven faster and more efficient, saving time and money.
Mountain Man has grown to more than 50 employees, and Sublette said the cutting machine was integral in spurring this growth. “It was more money than we wanted to spend,” he explained, “but it has been the best investment we have ever made in our business.”
