Merrill Tool & Machine adds largest-of-its-kind 5-axis mill

Merrill Tool & Machine, Merrill, Mich., a provider of design, engineering, and manufacturing services, has expanded its parts machining capabilities with the installation of the largest-of-its-kind Mazak Versatech V-140N 5-axis milling machine. The machine arrived at the 120,000-sq.-ft. facility on 19 semitrucks and took a week to unload.
The machine allows the company to offer precision machining services for workpieces as large as tractor-trailer cabs. Its dual-pallet changing system can be loaded with up to 60,000 lbs. per pallet.
Multiple projects can be programmed, set up, and machined in continuous multitasking operations without interrupting the machine spindle head. The 5-axis spindle head permits B and C rotary axis machining in 0.0001-degree increments. The 50-HP integral spindle motor headstock pumps out a 10,000-RPM maximum spindle speed and 253.7-ft.-lb. maximum torque for high-quality surface finishes on nonferrous and aluminum materials. At low speeds, the machine handles heavy-duty metal removal.
