Metal Supermarkets names winners of 2021 Metal My Way design contest

Grand prize winner “Maximus” by Nigel Fennell, Lexington, Ky.

Toronto small-quantity metal supplier Metal Supermarkets has announced the eight winners of its Metal My Way competition. Showcasing the best in welding, fabricating, metalworking, and design, the competition awarded winners in six categories, as well as two grand prize winners.

“Metal My Way showcases the impressive work of all types of metalworkers, and this year, for the first time, we encouraged students to compete as well,” said Stephen Schober, president/CEO of Metal Supermarkets. “We’re honored to urge young people to explore metal-related industries in a way that is accessible and exciting to them. We see a high level of craftsmanship at Metal Supermarkets every day, so it’s an honor to give both student and adult creators the recognition they deserve.”

Entries were judged on complexity, intricacy, creativity, uniqueness, craftsmanship, quality of metal used, and the skill required. The winners are:

  • Grand Prize: Nigel Fennell, Lexington, Ky. – “Maximus”
  • Grand Prize: Joey Gemini, Atlanta – “Rocket Launch Tower”
  • Best Car & Vehicle Project: Rob Lutz, Nashville, Tenn. – “Airplane Build”
  • Best Art & Design Project: Lori Norwood, Kansas City, Kan.– “The Last Day of Summer”
  • Best Furniture or Home Project: Peter Machen, Baltimore – “Gaia Bench”
  • Best Industrial or Shop Project: Jim Burns, Burnsville, Minn. – “Snow Model Engine”
  • Best Knife Project: Brenndan Eliuk, Winnipeg, Man. – “Dog Star Damascus”
  • Best Student Project: Russell Rucinski, San Antonio – “2B Continued Robot”

The grand prize winners, Nigel Fennell and Joey Gemini, were each awarded an EV 88 portable benchtop KAMA band saw. Each winner in the six secondary categories earned a Husky 46-in., nine-drawer mobile workbench with solid wood top.

Partnering with Metal Supermarkets to sponsor the event were KAMA, Cosen Saws, Ferric Machinery, OMAX, and Space Aid Mfg.
