Primetals to supply equipment for Charter Steel to enter SBQ straight bar market

London-based Primetals Technologies has been selected by Charter Steel to supply a cooling bed, cold shear, abrasive saws, stackers, banders, bar bundling, and banding machines to support the steelmaker’s new cut-to-length, special bar quality (SBQ) line as part of an expansion to its Cleveland facility. The company intends to introduce an engineered bar product in sizes from 0.75 to 3.25 in. dia. and bar lengths from 12 to 50 ft.

Primetals also will supply new troughs, shears, water boxes, switches, and stepless-reform and coiled transfer technology to upgrade Charter Steel’s existing coils rod and bar line. The coil handling equipment will employ both vertical and horizontal pallet systems. The contract also includes a complete mechatronic package with electrics and automation for the new equipment.
