Manufacturing technology orders up 3.8% in 2014
- December 8, 2014
- News Release
- Shop Management
October U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $417.80 million according to AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTO program, was down 35.0 percent from September and down 6.2 percent when compared with the total of $445.64 million reported for October 2013. With a year-to-date total of $4,150.41 million, 2014 is up 3.8 percent compared with 2013.
These numbers and all data in this report are based on the totals of actual data reported by companies participating in the USMTO program.
“As we move toward the end of 2014, we saw much of what we predicted for manufacturing technology orders through the year – low growth, but stability for order volume. The monthly drop from October isn’t unexpected, as since 1998 orders have dropped an average of 24 percent in any month following IMTS,” said Douglas K. Woods, President, AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology. “We continue to see growth in key industries, like automotive, medical, and aerospace. We believe the environment will stay ripe for capital equipment investment in 2015 and bring more good news for manufacturing overall.”
The USMTO report, compiled by the trade association representing the production and distribution of manufacturing technology, provides regional and national U.S. orders data of domestic and imported machine tools and related equipment. Analysis of manufacturing technology orders provides a reliable leading economic indicator as manufacturing industries invest in capital metalworking equipment to increase capacity and improve productivity.
NOTE: AMT - The Association For Manufacturing Technology’s intent is to always provide timely and accurate economic reports to our community. For this reason, we are making an adjustment to the USMTO report. Due to a change in survey participants the year over year comparison number for Metal Forming and Fabricating is not an accurate reflection of the data. We have adjusted the data for the past 12 months to take this change into consideration. The new chart reflects a consistent year over year comparison of the data at the current participation level.
U.S. manufacturing technology orders are also reported on a regional basis for geographic breakdowns of the United States.
Northeast Region— At $671.19 million, the 2014 year-to-date total for Northeast Region manufacturing technology orders was 0.5 percent higher than the comparable figure for 2013.
Southeast Region— Year-to-date manufacturing technology orders for the Southeast Region totaled $390.43 million up 6.4 percent when compared with 2013 at the same time.
North Central-East Region— North Central-East Region manufacturing technology orders in October stood at $106.51 million, down 20.4 percent from September’s $133.80 million but up slightly when compared with the $106.33 million total for October 2013. The 2014 year-to-date total of $1,090.99 million was 6.6 percent higher than the 2013 total at the same time
North Central-West Region— At $89.09 million, North Central-West Region manufacturing technology orders in October were off 32.9 percent from September’s $132.72 million and off 3.9 percent from the October 2013 total of $92.66 million. The 2014 year-to-date total of $730.68 million was 2.5 percent less than the comparable figure for 2013.
