Orbital pipe welding systems feature autoprogramming
- February 15, 2016

Magnatech’s Pipemaster power source models are used for multipass orbital pipe welding. The 515 model has a 150-amp output, and the 516 model either 200- or 400-amp output. They control weld head mechanical functions for torch rotation, wire feed, torch oscillation, arc voltage control, and control of arc length. The power sources can operate 22 different models of the manufacturer’s weld heads, as well as certain competitor models.
A primary concern in the welding industry is the need to program the equipment for each pipe size and material and the time needed for welders to learn to program a CNC tool. The proprietary autoprogramming mode allows operation without programming training. An inexperienced user can enter the pipe’s OD, wall thickness, and material, and the control generates a weld program.
Edit and scaling modes are available for modifying the parameters. The edit mode allows changes at any point in the weld cycle; the scaling mode allows a percentage change for the entire program. The power source stores up to 100 weld programs. Programs can be transferred using a standard USB flash drive.
