Speedy laser mirrors withstand high laser powers for welding
- June 9, 2015

- Laser Cutting
Fraunhofer has developed fast, durable microelectromechanical system (MEMS) mirrors that can perform laser cutting and welding tasks. They deflect the laser beam and guide it precisely over the workpiece while withstanding high laser powers, enabling them to process aluminum and sheet steel.
Micromirrors etched from silicon are at the heart of the flexible laser system. These scanning mirrors have a new protective coating and a special mounting to allow them to withstand laser powers in the kilowatt range. The thin mirrors can be swiveled back and forth at extremely high speeds, reaching frequencies of up to 100,000 Hz, for effective laser energy distribution.
The mirrors can be used to weld aluminum and copper together, and the heat input can be controlled precisely to heat up one metal more so that it makes up more of the melt.
