Coherent’s CleanWeld offers new approach to fiber laser welding

Coherent offers CleanWeld™ technology, an integrated approach to fiber laser welding that the company says delivers up to 80 percent spatter reduction, as well as minimal cracking and porosity. It also allows certain welding processes to be performed with up to 40 percent less laser power, the manufacturer reports.

The approach includes ARM fiber laser technology, process-optimized delivery optics and focusing heads, and in-house applications development capabilities to provide users with laser welding suited to their requirements.

Controlling and maximizing the stability of the keyhole and melt pool during the welding process involves a variety of techniques, such as changing the intensity distribution of the focused laser spot, introducing beam motion, and controlling vapor evacuation. This approach addresses these areas for use in diverse applications such as zero-gap welding of galvanized steel, automobile powertrain component welding, and aluminum and copper welding for electric car batteries.
