Seurat to use $41 million in new funding to accelerate commercialization of its metal 3D printing technology

Seurat Technologies announced that it has closed a $41 million Series B round of funding. The funds will be used to further accelerate development and commercialization of the Wilmington, Mass., company’s patented Area Printing, a metal additive manufacturing technology.

The process differs from existing AM technologies in that it focuses over 2 million points of laser light on a bed of metal powder—each point fully controllable in power and duration—to create production-grade, fully functional components. Area Printing delivers resolution and quality at the scale needed for the mass production of metal components across all industries, according to the company.

“Think of evolving from writing a letter to the advent of the printing press, but with lasers printing metal parts,” said Seurat’s CEO and co-founder, James DeMuth. The process simultaneously increases the build rate—up to 1,000 times faster than other single-layer systems—while also improving resolution.

Capricorn’s Technology Impact Fund led the Series B funding, which is supported by a new investment from global mobility supplier DENSO, as well as continued support from True Ventures, GM Ventures, Porsche Automobil Holding SE, Siemens Energy, and Maniv Mobility. In January 2018, Seurat raised $13.5 million in Series A financing, led by True Ventures.
