Cutting tool manufacturer adds 3D-printed tools to its lineup

Star Cutter Co. and its strategic partner Neher Group have announced the availability of 3D-printed PCD (polycrystalline diamond), monoblock tool bodies.

The additively manufactured bodies integrate with the holder interface to form a single robust tool, the companies say. This allows the design of more-complex geometries and improves chip evacuation by optimizing the location of coolant holes and channels. Among the benefits are wear life improvements of 30% or more and a 30% reduction in weight.

For applications that require complete removal of chips from the tool-workpiece interface, Star-Neher also offer deflectors that mount on a tool’s body. The only way chips can exit the cutting zone is through the tool’s flute channel.

The 3D printing technology is used for large reamers, milling cutters, and other tools. They are sold in North America by Star SU LLC, Hofmann Estates, Ill.
