Digital Metal launches a tool steel for binder jet additive manufacturing

Digital Metal has introduced a D2 tool steel for binder jetting. Digital Metal

As interest in metal binder jet 3D printing techniques keeps rising, says 3D printer builder Digital Metal, it plans to continue introducing materials that are usable with the technology.

The latest addition to the company’s portfolio is DM D2, a tool steel alloy that reportedly combines good wear-resistance and toughness. Though suitable for a range of applications, the alloy is recommended primarily for producing cutting and deformation tools.

The high-carbon, high-chromium D2 tool steel alloy can be heat-treated to high hardness and compressive strength, claims the company. “This alloy … allows for tailoring of the final material properties through various heat treatments after sintering,” said a Digital Metal spokesperson.
